1 News from D.Dornbluth! The"GORCH FOCK I" on Fri Jun 27, 2008 9:48 am

The Organization Tall-Ship-Friends took the challenge by purchasing of the historical Gorch Fock I, to reconstruct the former sail training ship for letting the dream come true of Gorch Fock I sailing on the high seas.

The GORCH FOCK I is a ship i Germany.

By now it is in very poor condition and we felt, that we can maybe help to reconstruct it again.

For that purpose Dornbluth developed this special edition of 75 pieces for this year’s 75th birthday.

More info about this limited watch is now on the Dornbluth webpage.

Regards
Tony Axelzon

3 So the 'secret' is out...! on Mon Jun 30, 2008 4:56 pm

I was very fortunate to see this model drawings and parts(but not fully assembled) in May, when I visited Mr. Dornbluth, but I promised him to keep it quiet until it will be released...
It is a very spectacular watch in every aspect...from the size...to the in-house movement...to the case who incorporate wood from the actual ship "Gorch Fock I" (the sister ship is in Romania and it is a school-ship - a brig - called "Mircea")...and of course, the sistem that holds the watch in the woodcase...is the same sistem used on old deck clocks (and I've seen some very old deck clocks on Mr. Dornbluth table with the same sistem that keeps the watch level, regardless the movement of the ship).
Again, the Dornbluth (micro)manufacture manage to transform watchmaking into art and reveals us an exceptional watch!
I realy envy the future owners of this limited edition watch...

Cheers, Staiku

It's really a gorgeous watch, that case is absolutely unique and the oversized crown gives to the watch a fantastic appeal. Many complimentes to all the 75 owner! Anyone know if the dial is made in house?

5 Gorch Fock Project on Tue Jul 01, 2008 11:35 pm

I know that there are many discussions about our new project. Let me first give you some information about the idea:

Two years ago I saw the ship in Stralsund, and I was shocked about the worse conditions it had. Actually I was just a visitor, but Mr. Marquard, the represenative of the organization, who owns the ship, took the opportunity and showed me and my wife around.
During the visit he additionally showed places on the ship, where tourists are actually not allowed to enter. Already this moment put me to the point to think about possibilities to help. I told him that I'm a watchmaker and he showed me the ship chronometers. These have been in worse condition as well, so I asked to take with me for repair.
He was so happy about that offer. The chronometers find a place on my big table (Staiku knows Very Happy ) and every day I passed that, I remembered the ship. So, I had the idea to create this special wrist watch and I the more I was thinking about it, the more ideas I had until .... the final timepiece with box. I have to tell, that we tried to keep as much as possible from the ship chronometers. So, here we made the engraved dial, the watch case ourselves, we changed the movement again, so there is much input...
Additionally the box: We created with the woodmaker this special box and another friend of mine "helped" us with the gambling... All of that took us two years from the idea to last Friday, the presentation.

I know, that this is a long statement, but I think, that you should know, how the story is behind.
Within the next days there will be much more infrmation about the project on the website, which we are preparing at the moment.
Hope you enjoy!!!

Interesting story! I'm very passionate to the history of the Italian Navy, and here we have the same situation with a lot of glorious ships but especially with some submarines who are the most importan force in the Italian Navy during WWII.
Your idea Dirk, is absolutely great. It' s very important keep alive this kind of testimoninaces.

Just recived an email from Dirk where he explain differences about "GORCH FOCK I" movement and his classical 99.2:

"First of all there is a difference, because for 99.2 is used some parts of Unitas 6497,
For Gorch Fock I we took some parts of Unitas 6498.
So, we developed a different second wheel and a different third wheel. Both differ for 99.2
and Gorch Fock I.
Furthermore we developed another power reserve mechanism, here 99.2 and Gorch Fock differ from each other as well."

. . . as the template for the movement, but I am intrigued by the use of a different power reserve indicator . . . is the indicator in the GF fundamentally different than the differential implementation used in the 99.2, and if so, is it identical to the system used in the 99.3? Curiously, Art

Good find - looks beautiful (not that I'd expect anything else!) - how nice it would be to be one of the lucky 75!
